Questions

What is Oakpad?

A notes app that stores your notes as plain markdown files on your own computer. You can connect your own AI to search, write and link them, and undo any change it makes.

Where are my notes stored?

In a folder you choose, as ordinary files. Oakpad has no server that holds them. You can open the folder in any other app at any time.

Is Oakpad free?

The notes app is free: files, links, graph, history, sync and search by words. Oakpad Pro is a one-time purchase that adds the AI features, voice dictation and search by meaning. No subscription, and all future updates are included.

Do I need an account?

No. Open it and write. If you turn on sync, it uses your own GitHub account.

What does “bring your own AI” mean? Do I pay for AI?

Oakpad doesn't sell AI. You connect an assistant or AI service you already use, or a model that runs on your computer. Any AI cost is between you and that provider, with no markup from us.

Can the AI damage my notes?

You choose for each notebook whether AI may read, create, change or delete notes. Every AI change is recorded, so you can undo it or restore the earlier text from history.

Does my data go to the cloud?

Not through Oakpad. If you use a cloud AI service, the notes you share with it go to that service. With a local model, nothing leaves your computer. If you turn on sync, your notes go to your own GitHub repository.

Can I use my existing notes?

Yes, if they are markdown files. Oakpad opens any folder of markdown files and understands [[double-bracket]] links. Features that depend on another app's plugins won't carry over. Oakpad is not affiliated with Obsidian or Logseq; those names are trademarks of their owners.

Does it work offline?

Writing, search and history work without internet. Sync and cloud AI need a connection, and catch up when you're back online. Search by meaning and dictation download their model once, then run offline.

Which devices does it run on?

Windows, macOS and Linux, plus phone and tablet apps. Connecting other AI apps works on the desktop apps.

Can I extend Oakpad?

Yes. Plugins can add new markdown syntax and new features to the app. Each plugin runs in a sandbox and only gets the access you allow, and you can turn any plugin off. Plugins work in the computer apps.

Is Oakpad open source?

No. Your notes are open files, plain markdown you can read and edit with any app, but the app isn't open source.

When does it launch?

Soon. There is no sign-up list, so check back here. Questions in the meantime: hello@oakpad.app.
